Lots of people misplace their phone every year. Whether it’s just under a couch cushion or you’ve left it behind at a store or restaurant, you can use a free online service to help get it back. Find My Phone, available online on Microsoft’s Windows Live web portal, can ring your phone and show it on a map. If you think it’s been stolen, you can also lock and erase the phone via the Web. Before you can use this service, you need to create a Windows Live ID on your phone or register an existing one.

1. Find, Lock, or Erase a Lost Phone

  1. On your PC, go to windowsphone.live.com and sign in with the Windows Live ID you registered on the phone.

  2. Click Find My Phone.

  3. Do one of the following:

    • Click Map It to show your phone’s approximate location on a map.

    • Click Ring It to make your phone ring, even if the ringer is turned off or it’s set to vibrate.

    • Click Lock It to lock your phone. You can also post a message on the screen with your contact info.

    • Click Erase It if you’re convinced that you’ll never get the phone back and want to make sure nobody can see what’s on it or make unauthorized calls.
